LIMERICK City and County Council is carrying out "urgent permanent repairs" on a busy regional road as a result of storm damage caused to road supporting structures.
The works are taking place on the R518 (Bruff Line) at Ballytigue Lower, located a couple of miles west of O'Rourke's Cross on the road towards Newcastle West.
A council spokesperson said they have had temporary traffic management arrangements in place since September.
However, this week, following a detailed engineering assessment they announced: "We are now carrying out urgent permanent repairs at the location."
"There was damage caused to road retaining walls, culverts and a bridge in this area in a storm event caused by high and turbulent flood waters in the rivercourse locally.
"We are repairing existing retaining walls, culverts and bridges permanently so that they are robust and able to support the road and watercourses," said the spokesperson.
The council apologises for any inconvenience and ask motorists to take alternative routes as advised.
"The road will be closed to all traffic and a detour will be in operation while the works are ongoing and all diversions will be signposted.
"Local access will be maintained where possible. Motorists are advised that significant delays are expected during this period.
Any inconvenience caused is regretted with delays expected," said the spokesperson.
The council has given no date for when they expect the works to be completed.
