Limerick author's book takes fresh look at IRA support in modern era

Gearóid Ó Faoleán looks at the how the civil service, the security forces and even the GAA influenced Provisional IRA’s campaign from 1969 to 1980

A NEW book being launched in Limerick takes a deeper look at level of support that the Provisional IRA received in the Republic of Ireland.

A Broad Church The Provisional IRA in the Republic of Ireland, 1969–1980 by Gearóid Ó Faoleán looks at the how the civil service, the security forces and even the GAA influenced Provisional IRA’s campaign.

The book looks at key events, such as the 1974 bank robbery in Shannon Co Clare and the theft of the entire takings from the Munster senior hurling final at Thurles in 1977.

A Broad Church chronicles these and other unheralded activities from 1969 to 1980.

The author Gearóid Ó Faoleán was awarded a PhD in Modern Irish History from the University of Limerick in 2014 and currently works in scholarly publishing in London.

Gearóid is a member of the Oral History Network of Ireland and The Irish Association of Professional Historians.

The launch will take place at the Shannon Rowing Club, Sarsfield Bridge, on Friday May 3 at 7pm.

The event will be attended by Ruan O’Donnell, head of the History Department at the University of Limerick and the official historian of the Robert Emmet Association.
