Limerick City East Meet the Candidates event set for next Thursday night

Election 2019: Meet the Candidates event in Limerick set for Tait House

Venue: Tait House, Southill

IN the final lead-up to the 2019 local elections, a special ‘meet the candidates’ and voter registration event is to take place this Thursday, May 2, at 7.30pm.

The event will cover the City East electoral area and all candidates intending to run for election will be invited to attend on the evening.

Tait House are working in collaboration with An Garda Siochana, to host a one-stop shop for voter registration where people will be assisted to register for the supplementary register of electors if they are not already registered to vote.

It comes with the election day hoving into view, with Limerick voters going to the polls on May 24 to elect new members of City and County Council, plus European parliament candidates.

On top of this, voters will be asked to decide whether to bring in a directly elected mayor, and vote on whether to remove the constitutional provision relating to how long people must be living apart before they can divorce.

The evening will also involve a questions and answers forum where candidates will be invited to address the voters and voters will be given the opportunity to have their questions answered by candidates.

Tracey Lynch, the chief executive of Tait House, said: “Statistics tell us that the voter turn-out in certain areas has been at worryingly low levels over recent elections. Crucially we want to encourage as many new voters as possible to have their say.”

The event is free – more information, 061-415340.
