Christmas comes early for community organisations

€70k in discretionary funds was allocated by councillors and Abbeyfeale Christmas Lights committee which was allocated €3,500

CHRISTMAS has come early for a number of community and voluntary groups in West Limerick which have been allocated thousands of euro in funding by councillors.

At their April meeting, members of the Newcastle West Municipal District approved the payment of almost €30,000 in discretionary funding under the General Municipal Allowance scheme. Among the voluntary groups which will receive funding is the Abbeyfeale Christmas Lights committee which was allocated €3,500.

Other groups to receive funding include the Harnett International Reunion which takes place in Abbeyfeale in July (€3,000), Fleadh by the Feale which takes place in Abbeyfeale in May (€4,000), Abbeyfeale Town Park (€3,500), the Churchtown Grotto committee in Newcastle West (€3,500), Glin Development Association (€3,500), Abbeyfeale Community Council (€700) and Mountcollins Community Centre (€2,000).

In addition to community and voluntary groups, funding totalling €3,000 was allocated for road improvement works at a number of locations while €900 is to be used to upgrade public lighting. 

Separately, members of the Adare – Rathkeale Municipal District have approved the allocation of €37,500 to a variety of groups and organisations under the scheme.

The groups which are to receive funding are: Foynes Community Council (€2,000), the Barrigone Blessed Well committee (€2,000), Adare Community Trust (€3,000), Askeaton Community Council (€1,500), Shountrade NS (€2,500), Croagh NS (€2,500), Castle Rovers FC (€1,000), Ballyhahill  Community Council (€1,000), Fedamore Community Hall (€1,000), Askeaton Civic Trust (€5,000), Askeaton Arts Group (€4,000), Askeaton Tidy Towns (€2,000), Askeaton soccer club (€4,000), Pallaskenry Community Council (€4,000) and Ardcanny/Mellon Graveyard committee (€2,000).

At their April meeting on Tuesday, councillors in the Adare - Rathkeale Municipal District also approved the allocation of €6,100 under the GMA scheme for road improvement works, flood relief works and improved road signage at a number of locations including at Croom, Fedamore and Crecora.
