New winter warning from Limerick gardai as thieves steal heating oil

Gardai have warned homeowners to take measures to prevent their fuel from being stolen

GARDAI in Limerick are urging homeowners to buy locks for their oil tanks in order to prevent their fuel from being stolen.

The appeal comes following an incident on the northside of the city during which thieves siphoned €200 worth of heating oil within hours of it being delivered.

The incident happened last Thursday afternoon in the Old Cratloe Road area.

“Most homes have their oil tank concealed and it can be behind a hedge or wall so there isn’t always the chance of somebody seeing the activity of thieves,” said divisional crime prevention officer Sgt Ber Leetch.

“The advice is to buy a lock for your tank, a fill of oil is an expensive purchase and it should be protected,” she added.
