Alphie McCourt pictured in Limerick in 2010
A MEMORIAL service in honour of the late Alphie McCourt will take place at the Frank McCourt museum on Hartstonge Street today at 4.30pm.
Following the funeral service of the 75 year-old Limerick born writer in New York last week, artist and museum curator Una Heaton has organised the event to allow his Limerick friends to pay their respects and tributes.
“Alphie was one of nature’s gentlemen, and he had a lot more to give. He died as he lived – peacefully. It was so sudden and it’s very sad for all the family,” Ms Heaton told the Limerick Leader.
It is the second death in the family in the past year, leaving Malachy McCourt, 84, as the only surviving brother. Brother Michael, 79, a bartender in San Francisco, passed away in September last.
Among those due to pay tribute will be his great school friend Michael Ryan, amongs others.
