THE Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has launched an investigation after a man was shot in the face during a garda operation in County Limerick.
While details remain unclear, it is understood the man, who is from Eastern Europe, sustained injuries when a garda’s firearm discharged accidentally.
The shooting happened at around 2.30am at a location between Newcastle West and Shanagolden.

While there has been no offiical comment from gardai, a spokesperson for GSOC confirmed an investigation is underway after the matter was referred to it under under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act.
“The man, in his 30s, was shot in the face by a garda member during a planned garda operation. He was transferred to hospital and his condition is reported this morning as stable, said the spokesperson.
