A man has been arrested in Limerick by gardaí in connection with a major cross-border terrorism investigation on Tuesday afternoon, December 16, 2025.
The man, aged in his 30s, was detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at a garda station in the midlands.
The man has since been released without charge and a file is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The investigation is being led by An Garda Síochána’s Special Detective Unit, with the first arrest occurring in Laois on November 5, 2025.
Speaking on the investigation on November 7, Assistant Garda Commissioner Michael McElgunn, stated:"An Garda Síochána is committed to identifying, assessing and countering security threats to our communities.”

“This ongoing operation demonstrates the close working relationships An Garda Síochána has with our colleagues in the Police Service of Northern Ireland to investigate and interdict threats across the island of Ireland, keeping people safe.”
Gardaí have said that “no further information is available at this time” in relation to the Limerick arrest.
