A BEAUTIFUL mural of Istabraq on Clancy's Bar in Bruff has stood the test of time just like the horse it was painted in honour of.

The JP McManus-owned three-time Champion Hurdle winner passed away last year at the great age of 32.

An article some years ago in a national newspaper about the famous horse said, “You know you're entering Istabraq country after seeing a mural on Clancy’s pub in Bruff”.

When contacted by the Limerick Leader, Jack Clancy, proprietor, said it was sad news of Istabraq's passing but what a long and happy life he had.

The beautiful mural, which adorns the side of the pub, was painted by Niall O’Dwyer shortly after the horse retired.

“It is based on a picture from the Cork Examiner. It won an award for the photographer,” said Jack.

Renowned British horse racing journalist Brough Scott and the team from Channel 4 racing have visited Bruff due to the mural.

“We’re very proud of the association,” said Jack, who also renamed his restaurant the Istabraq restaurant.

He remembers fondly when the pub was full of happy punters who had backed Istabraq to win three Champion Hurdles.

“We had as much excitement as they had in Cheltenham,” said Jack.
