IMPROVEMENTS are to be made around the remains of a 12th century church in Mungret.

St Nessan’s Church has been in State ownership since 1881, with the land also consisting of two other churches.

The main church is joined by an unnamed church with a small graveyard on the left-hand side of the road, and the Abbey Church and graveyard on the opposite side.

Now, Limerick City and County Council are to transfer the land to the Office of Public Works.

Contractors will then demolish one of the disused farm buildings which covers the east window of St Nessan’s Church.

This will pave the way for improvement works on the boundary, as well as an upgrade to the landscaping around it to provide a proper setting for the church.

The move comes after council archaeologist Sarah McCutcheon held talks with government officials and agreed on the land sale.

Councillors are expected to approve the sale of the 0.1 hectare of land for a nominal fee of €1 in September.

St Nessan's is named after the founder of the abbey at Mungret.
