LIMERICK’S four-in-a-row senior hurling side are to be given one of the city and county’s top honours.

Councillors this week approved plans to afford John Kiely’s charges a civic reception, at a date to be arranged.

Arguably the greatest hurling side in GAA history, the Treatymen have won five of the last seven All-Ireland titles.

And they have also landed the Munster title six years in a row.

Council priomh chomhairleoir Dan McSweeney called the special meeting for this Monday afternoon when the plans for the ceremony were rubber-stamped.

He said: “It is difficult now to believe that there was a 45 year drought before the Liam MacCarthy Cup returned to Shannonside with that memorable win against Galway in the 2018 All-Ireland Hurling final. This team, under the expert guidance of John Kiely and his backroom team, have instilled an immense sense of pride across the county. Their hard work, drive, and unquenchable spirit continue to inspire.”

He acknowledged Limerick fell short of landing an historic fifth straight title when they lost their semi-final to eventual runners-up Cork this year.

“But Limerick played thrilling matches throughout this year’s championship. Their fluid movement, quick passes, and strategic positioning make them a joy to watch,” added Cllr McSweeney, who is from the hurling stronghold of Patrickswell.

The civic reception was formally proposed by Independent councillor Eddie Ryan - a neighbour of hurling boss Mr Kiely’s in Galbally - and seconded by Cllr John O'Donoghue of Independent Ireland.

Getting a civic reception is second only to receiving the Freedom of Limerick.

It’s exclusively the preserve of the 40 members of Limerick City and County Council to approve these events.

It’s the second time Mr Kiely’s team will be been honoured with a civic reception.

In 2018, the then Mayor James Collins afforded a civic reception following their breakout win.

A civic reception planned for 2021 was shelved due to Covid-19.
