LIMERICK Live can reveal a first look at how a new multi-storey development will appear if it gets the go-ahead.

As confirmed by this newspaper last week, planning permission is being sought for a five-storey complex which could bring 15 new apartments to the heart of Limerick.

Businessman Donal Mulcahy is seeking the go-ahead from local planners to develop in a spot which has lain idle for a number of years at High Street in the heart of Limerick city.

According to papers lodged with council, the development would see the demolition of two existing mews structures.

In their place would be a five-storey building comprising of 15 residential units.

Healy Partners Architects has completed the designs of this building.

Its director Donough McCrann has said: “It’s a very vibrant little square with Mother Mac’s Bar in it”.

“These residential units are all designed to be ‘own-door’ around an urban courtyard and a garden. It will be a mixture of studio, one-bed and two bedroomed units,” he explained.

He believes there is demand for city centre housing given the progressing of the Opera Centre site nearby, plus the 1BQ building on the riverside, which will house Verizon.

Mr McCrann said: “It’s fantastic to see areas like this progressing. People are contributing and seeing value in having residential units in the city. I think this will be a fantastic bonus for a derelict site in the city.”

As well as the new homes, there is also a proposal for a commercial unit at the ground floor of the development. Mr McCrann hopes this will contribute to the commerce of the High Street area.

The development has already been welcomed by Mike McMahon, of Mother Mac’s Pub.

Planners from Limerick City and County Council are expected to make a decision on whether the building can go ahead or not on or before Monday, August 19.
