BREAKING: First count in historic Limerick mayoral election announced

JOHN Moran has surged into a commanding lead following the announcement of the first count of the mayoral election.

The former secretary general at the Department of Finance is 5,405 ahead of the second placed candidate Helen O'Donnell.

With the quota set at 39,873, no candidate has yet been elected.

However, Colm O'Morain has been eliminated.

His vote of 530 will now be transferred.

Fourteen candidates remain in the race to become Limerick's first directly elected mayor.
