SOME of Europe’s brightest young engineers were in Limerick for a special summit.

The European Young Engineers (EYE) were in the area for their annual conference.

It was held in collaboration with the Engineers Ireland Thomond Region, the industry group representing professionals in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary.

The event in Limerick coincided with the 30th anniversary of EYE, which is an international not-for-profit group representing around half a million young engineers from 20 European nations.

Their conference began on Thursday evening with a meet and greet at Dolans Bar in the city centre, where attendees enjoyed live Irish music and traditional dance performances.

The next day saw a series of company site visits, starting with the famous ESB power station at Ardnacrusha.

The site continues to generate renewable energy through hydroelectric power.

Staying in Clare, the engineers headed for Shannon, where they explored Jaguar Land Rover, with staff there designing some of the most advanced forms of transportation.

They also visited Atlantic Aviation Group and the Future Mobility Campus Ireland in Shannon, where they learned about innovations in aircraft maintenance, drone navigation, and autonomous vehicles.

On Saturday, the conference moved to the newly opened TUS campus at Coonagh, on Limerick’s northside which specialises in engineering.

Speakers included college president Prof Vincent Cunnane, council digital boss Alan Dooley and Wassim Derguech, the founder of Shannon’s Future Mobility Campus.

A gala dinner attended by Mayor Gerald Mitchell at the Limerick Strand Hotel brought things to a close.
