A BUDDY reading programme has helped children across Limerick city to discover a love of the written word.
The buddy reading programme was developed by Tusla in 2020, after the pandemic, as a seed funding project.
It is now run in four schools with the aim of supporting and encouraging primary school children with their reading and social development, as well as providing transition year students with the opportunity to contribute to their community.
It is also a meaningful social placement for the secondary school students.
This year, 73 young people took part in the programme in Colaiste Mhichíl CBS, Coláiste Nano Nagle, Scoil Iosagáin CBS and Our Lady of Lourdes National School.
The programme allows younger primary school children to see older readers as role models as they read with them.
Transition year student Casey said: “The bond that has blossomed between us students transcends the mere act of reading together. It is a testament to the power of connection and empathy. Us secondary school students have not only become mentors, but also friends and role models to our younger counterparts.”

Sinead Hickey, from Tusla Mid-West, said the programme has become a great resource for all of the young people involved.
“The buddy reading programme has become an invaluable asset for children and young people in participating schools. It gives young children the opportunity to learn in a fun and inclusive environment with their peers, and gives young adults involved, a sense of achievement, as well as boosting empathy and connection with their communities.”
She said that they are looking forward to the programme growing.
At its core is the mentoring relationship between the transition year students and the primary school children they are reading with.
A recognition and learning event was held for all of the participants in the International Rugby Experience.
