INDEPENDENT northside councillor Frankie Daly said he wants to be a “mayor of action”.
He was speaking as he launched his campaign for the office of directly elected mayor at an event in the Curragower Bar in Clancy Strand in the city centre.
Cllr Daly, who topped the poll in the City North ward in the 2019 election and came close to a Dail seat the following year, is hoping to become Limerick’s first executive mayor.
He was joined by friends and family at the launch event, and was also supported by fellow Independent councillors Brigid Teefy and Eddie Ryan, actor Zeb Moore and former detective garda Sean Lynch, who is also seeking to be elected to council in City West.
Cllr Daly said through the mayoralty, “there will never be a better opportunity for one person to make such a difference for the people of Limerick”.
“As a councillor who wants to do his best for everybody, I have seen the struggles people are facing. Families struggling to pay rents, mortgages, childcare. Farmers worrying about their land and their future, people worrying if they’ll ever get on the property ladder and those who feel they might never get a job,” he said.
Cllr Daly is one of three Independent candidates who have declared for the inaugural contest.
“The new mayor will be working with all 40 councillors and being an unpartisan independent will guarantee equality and fairness when big decisions need to be made for the people of Limerick. I’ve a strong track record of working with everyone, from all corners of Limerick - political and otherwise - ensuring I continue to justify people’s faith and trust in me to help make their lives better,” said Cllr Daly, who is also seeking re-election in City North.
“By voting for this directly elected mayor, Limerick has given itself a real advantage over other Irish cities and it’s one which we should be exploiting to the full,” he concluded.
