Much-loved teacher to lead St Patrick's Day parade in Limerick town

'It is always a joy to be greeted with a hug by a past pupil' - retired teacher, Maureen Lynch

MUCH-LOVED retired teacher and choir member Maureen Lynch has been announced as the grand marshal of this Sunday’s St Patrick’s Day parade in Kilmallock.

It begins at the earlier time of 12.30pm, starting at the church.

Tony Dowling, chairperson of Kilmallock Community Council, said they were honoured that Mrs Lynch has agreed to lead the parade.

“Maureen is loved by one and all - she will have taught many of the onlookers! St Patrick’s Day is all about celebrating your community and homeplace and Maureen epitomises that,” said Mr Dowling.

Mrs Lynch is known by one and all in Kilmallock and surrounding parishes. She taught in Kilmallock Boys National School for decades and was a member of the choir from 1977 to 2023 and as director from 1993.

“I have had the privilege of working with dedicated, committed, team-playing and supportive colleagues in my professional life, regardless of where I worked. I have precious and treasured memories of past pupils and their supportive and appreciative parents.

“It is always a joy to be greeted with a hug by a past pupil. It’s a sign of success!” smiled Mrs Lynch, who is married to Pat and they have two adult daughters, Patricia and Pauline.

Mr Dowling said Kilmallock Community Council have been working hard on this year’s parade and hopes for a big turnout of participants and onlookers on Sunday.

He said 50/50 tickets are still on sale for €2 each or 3 for €5 with the pot growing every day.

“With the continued support of Dansko Foods, our main sponsor, and a grant from Limerick City and County Council we agreed that the local businesses over the years have been very generous making contributions ensuring the parade went ahead, so we will not be calling on businesses this year.

"Some, however, have already called to us, which we are extremely grateful for, and we will put it towards the prizes on the day,” said Mr Dowling.
