€40m medical facility gets the go-ahead in Limerick

A render of the proposed new private hospital

LIMERICK has received a massive boost after city planners cleared the way for a massive €40m medical facility on the northside.

Global healthcare firm UPMC is part of a group which has received conditional planning permission to develop a private day hospital and medical facility.

The development is expected to lead to 200 roles in construction alone.

It will be located Moyross Avenue, on land at the northern end of the estate just off the new Coonagh to Knockalisheen Road.

It’s the first of what’s anticipated to be several planning applications in the area, which has become known as the Ballygrennan Regional Development Site.

Plans are in the pipeline for a €20m three-storey nursing home operated by Mowlam Healthcare.

Alongside this, there will be 115 new homes constructed.

Limerick Chamber has written to the council in support of the multi-million euro scheme.

In a joint letter, chief executive Dee Ryan and chief economist Sean Golden wrote: “The proposed development not only promises to bolster health infrastructure in Limerick and the Mid-West, but it will also promote investment in an area which has lacked investment in the past.”

“Providing additional healthcare facilities on top of what is already planned, will ensure we can efficiently deal with the pent-up demand within the system and adequately plan for future population growth,” they added.

The Ballygrennan Regeneration Project is a collaborative effort between development firm Whitebox, UPMC and affordable housing provider Cluid.

Planning permission was signed off by council on Friday, subject to 20 conditions.

These include a stipulation that the four-storey medical unit provide lockers, showers and changing room facilities. And at least 10% of car parking spaces should provide electric vehicle charging points, with the others set up for this to be introduced.

This represents the second private hospital approved in Limerick in recent years, with a Bons Secours facility approved in Ballysimon Road in 2022.
