AN EXCITING and rare opportunity has come to Limerick’s job market as Shannon Foynes Port Company is looking to recruit a new assistant harbour master.

Candidates are currently being sought for the commercially-focussed role within the Port Services Department at the port company.

Working for Ireland’s second-largest port operation, currently handling more than 11 million tonnes of cargo per year, the successful candidate will have a key role in overseeing commercial activity at what is Ireland’s main deep-water facility.

The estuary itself, which has facilitated significant trading since the time of the Vikings, has a channel depth of more than 32 metres and a handling capacity for large ships of up to 200,000 deadweight tonnes.

Shannon Foynes Port Company operates the largest dry bulk port in Ireland at Foynes and its annual trade, which is valued at around €8.5bn, supports in the region of 3,700 jobs.

The assistant harbour master, working closely with the harbour master, Michael Kennelly, will oversee the coordination of daily marine services within the ports - at Limerick city and Foynes.

This includes managing commercial shipping movements and collaborating on support services.

Port security will be a key responsibility, including adhering to local, national, and international regulations.

The development and testing of emergency plans and response strategies will also fall to the successful candidate, once they take up the roll.

Risk management will be another important area of responsibility for the successful candidate.

Equally important will be the environmental management of the port, including the development of a waste management plan and ensuring the port company complies with regulations.

According to the job advertisement, the ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced marine professional. Ideally, they will have both seagoing and shore-based experience.

A number of qualifications are preferred, including the STCW 11/2 Masters Class 1 Certificate of Competency.

Previous experience as a harbour master, a deputy or assistant harbour master, or a (marine) pilot, will be favourably considered.

For those interested, applications should be sent by email to amoran@sfpc.ie.

The deadline to apply is February 6.
