MORE works on a historic building in Limerick city centre are planned for this Wednesday, to further secure the area, a spokesperson for Limerick City and County Council has confirmed.
It comes after a local business owner criticised the lack of communication regarding the works, which has resulted in large parts of Thomas Street being sectioned off.
Jone Crute, one of the owners of Crew Brewing, which is located close to the damaged building, said the situation is “anxiety-inducing” as emergency works were carried out on the building, “without anyone letting us know whether it was safe for the customers.”
In response to a query from the Limerick Leader/Limerick Live, a council spokesperson said the contractor has installed the exclusion zone on the ground to mitigate the risk to the surrounding businesses, buildings, roadways, and pedestrians.
“There are works planned to further secure the area for the benefit of all the above stakeholders,” he said.
The council stated that repair works are required after the council-owned building was damaged during Storm Debi, last month.
“Evacuation was necessary of the neighbouring 32 Thomas Street.
“All tenants have been relocated and provided with food allowances and LCCC’s Homeless Action Team is in communication with them. LCCC is also liaising with the property owner,” the spokesperson added.
