IMPROVING health was the subject of one award-winning conference, which was led by a Limerick-based lecturer.
The WONCA World Rural Health Conference 2022, at the University of Limerick (UL), scooped a first-of-its-kind award at Fáilte Ireland's conference ambassador recognition awards.
The inaugural Social Impact and Legacy Spotlight award is given to a conference that showcases understanding of the importance of extending social impact to rural communities.
Led by Professor Liam Glynn from the UL school of medicine, the winning conference was themed ‘improving health, empowering communities’.
In total, Fáilte Ireland celebrated the contributions of 104 conference ambassadors. The ambassadors were acknowledged for their efforts in successfully hosting an international conference in Ireland between 2018 and 2022.
Collectively, these events have contributed €125 million to the Irish economy. Fáilte Ireland’s conference ambassador programme was developed to support sector leaders or influencers in an academic field, who want to host an international conference in Ireland.
Karen Brosnahan, general manager, the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau said:
“Conferences have a unique ability to encourage collaboration, generate new ideas and contribute to new policy changes that benefit our citizens. The social, cultural and economic impact of these events cannot be underestimated.
“We were especially thrilled that Dr Liam Glynn won the Social Impact & Legacy Award. Dr Glynn’s conference WONCA World Rural Health Conference, 2022 did just that”.
These conferences were worth €443 million to the Irish economy and are often held during off-peak seasons. Each international delegate is valued at more than three times the average leisure tourist.
Chief Executive of Fáilte Ireland Paul Kelly said: “The ambassador's expertise, industry knowledge and unwavering commitment to successfully hosting international conferences in Ireland is nothing short of exceptional.
“They have created value that extends way beyond the realm of tourism and have exemplified what it truly means to be a conference ambassador.”
