Big boost for local medieval castle

‘Visitor numbers have exceeded 90,000 annually’

KING John’s Castle continued development has been boosted by €2.264 million in government funding.

The council took over the operation of Limerick city’s landmark tourist attraction from Shannon Heritage in April 2022.

All business operations and staff transferred to Discover Limerick DAC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Limerick City and County Council.

Discover Limerick DAC was established specifically to operate and develop key tourism attractions in Limerick that will strengthen Limerick as a destination and attract increased visitor numbers.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage are supporting the transfer with the provision of the funding.
Mayor Gerald Mitchell said; “This €2.264 million in government funding fortifies King John’s Castle and will propel the historic tourist attraction into a new era. Visitor numbers have exceeded 90,000 annually over the past two years and the implementation of a strategic masterplan for the castle and surrounding area will ensure its rich history continues to captivate both locals and visitors alike.”

Limerick City and County Council Chief Executive, Dr Pat Daly commented; “Limerick City and County Council were delighted to take over the operation of King John’s Castle in April 2022. It presented an exciting opportunity to grow.”
