AN IRISH Defence Force peacekeeper visited one Limerick school for an informative talk to senior cycle students.

Defence Forces’ Sergeant Joey Burnett and Irish Ambassador for Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay, Gerard McCoy, visited Ardscoil Mhuire to discuss Ireland’s engagement overseas with fifth and sixth year students.

This visit was part of the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Global Ireland Schools Programme and gave the opportunity for students to ask open questions about current global operations.

A total of 229 schools have engaged with the programme since its launch by the Taoiseach in December 2018.

Bríd Herbert, Principal of Ardscoil Mhuire, thanked both men for bringing their years of expertise to Ardscoil Mhuire, where students were “fascinated by their insights into how foreign policy is practised.”

The 2023 Global Ireland Schools Programme took place in late October.

Visits by heads of Irish diplomatic missions abroad as well as Defence Forces peacekeepers gave students around the country the opportunity to learn about Ireland’s engagement overseas from the point of view of those on the ground.

For Ardscoil Mhuire, the future is ‘bright’, as school management is currently working closely with the Department of Education on a new building project to extend the school grounds into an adjacent field.

The Corbally situated school is an all-girls, voluntary secondary school under the trusteeship of CEIST, whose mission is to ensure that all students are valued and assisted to reach their full academic and personal potential.
