A 44-YEAR-OLD man who is charged in connection with the fatal assault of father-of-two Gerard Curtin at the weekend is due to appear before a court in Limerick for the first time later this Tuesday.

Joe Cahill, with an address of Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen, Limerick, appeared before a special court sitting in Ennis, County Clare on Sunday evening, after he was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Mr Curtin at the same address in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The charge which has been preferred is contrary to Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Mr Curtin (pictured, below) from Railway House, Spitland, Old Cork Road, Limerick was discovered unresponsive outside a house in the Garryowen shortly before 5am on Saturday.

He was pronounced dead a short time later - sparking a major garda investigation.

During Sunday's procedural court hearing, Inspector Daragh Browne, of Henry Street garda station told Judge Marie Keane directions are to be sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Solicitor for Mr Cahill, Eamonn Dillon did not oppose an application to remand his client in custody until this Tuesday when he will appear before Limerick District Court via video-link.

No application was made for legal aid.

Mr Curtin's funeral Mass will take place at St John’s Cathedral this Wednesday.
