Limerick sees major growth in co-operative homes available across county

CO-OPERATIVE Housing Ireland (CHI), an organisation which provides high-quality housing to low-income households, has unveiled its 2022 Annual Report, putting the spotlight on its housing growth in Limerick.

Most notably, in 2022, CHI made a significant impact in Limerick by delivering 136 homes, accounting for 36% social rented new builds.

This offered housing to local families and individuals, and as of the end of the year, more than 353 people in Limerick called a CHI house or apartment "their home."

As of October 2023, CHI now owns, manages, and supports 353 homes in Limerick having provided 136 in 2022.

This is a recent growth for CHI in the county, who, in partnership with Limerick City and County Council, now provide more homes in Limerick city and county than any other Approved Housing Body (AHB).

Speaking at the launch of 137 homes in Amharc Muileann, Bloodmill Road in July this year, CHI member tenant Sinead O’Loughlin said: "Since I’ve been involved, I have had such peace of mind and a real sense of security, as have my children.
"The neighbours I have met on the estate are fantastic," she added.

CHI board member and member tenant, Frances Kawala, stressed the importance of community involvement: "The core tenets of CHI are to champion the co-operative principles in delivering homes and supporting communities.

"The inclusion of the member voice at all levels ensures that CHI provides sustainable communities where people thrive."

Uniquely, all new member tenants are part of a local co-operative, allowing them a concrete input into decisions affecting their communities.
