LIMERICK is set to benefit from a substantial increase in funding for 2024 as part of the Irish government's commitment to support local authorities.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, announced that Limerick will receive an additional €1.5 million in Local Property Tax (LPT) baseline funding.
This boost brings the city's total allocation to €19.05 million for the year 2024.
Every local authority receives a minimum, or ‘baseline’, amount of funding from the Local Property Tax, supplemented by funding from the exchequer, where a local authority’s LPT income is lower than its baseline.
Baseline funding is distributed according to a county’s population, area, deprivation levels, local authority income raising capacity and national policy priorities.
Limerick's baseline funding is essential and recognises the role played by local authority, not only in delivering a broad range of services day-to-day, but also in successfully leading the local response to emergency situations.
These include establishment of the community call during the pandemic, and the community response forum to support the Ukrainian crisis.
Minister Darragh O’Brien TD acknowledged the challenges faced by local authorities and their growing demands for services.
“This significant increase in funding should go a long way towards easing the pressure on the sector,” he stated.
