Woman struck by rock along Limerick walking route

A WOMAN was struck by a rock allegedly thrown by youths while on a popular walkway in Limerick city, it has been claimed.

Gardai have confirmed they received a report of a number of youths throwing rocks at Canal Bank near Clare Street in the city on Sunday, August 6.

According to the woman’s husband, who wishes to remain anonymous, he and his family were out for a cycle when the incident occurred.

They noticed the young people on the bridge firing objects but when the husband started recording them, they ran away.

The family crossed under the bridge when the youths started pelting rocks at them, they had been hiding behind shrubs according to the husband.

It was then that the man’s wife got a “good size” rock thrown at her which struck her side.

“Luckily it hit her side and it didn’t hit her head or anything major,” he said.

“It could have been much worse, we had our two kids with us and we had the cargo bikes so they were in front. It could have hit them.”

The incident was reported to the gardai and the area was later patrolled but upon arrival, the reported youths had dispersed.

Green Party councillor for Limerick City East Seán Hartigan said there has been a problem with youths along the canal bank for some time.

“I’ve seen some youngsters, driving along on e-scooters trying to push cyclists into the canal, I’ve seen people on scramblers driving at other people, I’ve seen people being harassed by youngsters,” Cllr Hartigan said.
