Limerick council seeks to buy land for road upgrade

COUNCIL chief executive Dr Pat Daly has signalled it’s the local authority’s intention to buy almost 40 parcels of land in Castletroy, Limerick on a compulsory basis.

The sales of land are being proposed as part of a major upgrade to Golf Links Road.

The thoroughfare is seen as an important connection between Castletroy, Monaleen, Newtown, Annacotty and Ballysimon, which is home to a big employment area of Limerick.

The upgrades are designed to accommodate increased pedestrian, bike and motorised vehicular traffic accessing Golf Links Road from these areas.

Council consultants have said this will be achieved through road widening, road realignment and the replacement of a bridge.

On top of this, traffic junctions will be upgraded, while footpaths will be improved.

New pedestrian and cycle links will be installed.

It's for this reason, private land needs to be acquired, with the council using its powers to forcibly acquire the land.

It has advertised the patches of land, and details of their owners, and applied to An Bord Pleanala to acquire the sites.

The national planning appeals body will consider any objection to the council’s proposal which is made by Monday, September 11 next.

Council is planning to acquire some sites permanently, and some temporarily to facilitate work on the road upgrade.
