THE ONLY branch of fast food outlet McDonald’s in Limerick city centre has closed for good.
As revealed by the Limerick Leader, management at the outlet located at the corner of Cruises Street and O’Connell Street confirmed the closure last month.
It came after 30 years of trading from the same site.
A spokesperson for the firm said the shop is not compatible with what it calls its ‘Convenience of the Future’ strategy.
A notice posted on the door confirms the closure, and signposts customers to its other city stores, at the Crescent Shopping Centre in Dooradoyle, the Jetland Shopping Centre in Caherdavin and Castletroy Town Centre.
No compulsory redundancies have arisen from the closure of the store, with all staff offered a transfer to one of these restaurants, or a McDonald’s outlet further afield.
The announcement by McDonald's represents further disappointing news for Cruises Street, which has lost a number of big name shops and businesses in recent years.
McDonald's opened its city centre restaurant in 1993.
At the time, it was the second McDonald's outlet in Limerick, accompanying the premises at Crescent Shopping Centre in Dooradoyle.
