ABSEILING down the side of a historical local landmark is what members of one courageous organisation are planning to do for charity.

Down Syndrome Limerick has announced it will host an abseil fundraiser at King John's Castle on Thursday, August 10.

Proceeds from next month’s event will go toward the Down Syndrome organisation, which delivers support services for children and adults with the chromosomal syndrome.

Ellen Tuffy, Chairperson of Down Syndrome Limerick, says two fundraising events will come together on the day. “We did an abseil event two years ago in Thomond Park, and everybody really loved the adrenaline rush.

“This year, the Tour de Munster, an annual charity cycle in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland that travels through the six counties in Munster, is coming to Limerick on August 10, too.

“We meet and greet them in King John’s Castle and so, we said we would do the abseil on the same day to create a bit more of a festival vibe!”

The entry fee covers the cost of participation, and Down Syndrome Limerick is asking each participant to raise €250 - all of which goes entirely to the charity.

“Parents and committee members will be taking part in the abseil, but members of the public too are welcome,” Ellen said.

“The legendary cyclist John Kelly is leading the Tour de Munster cycle!”

Down Syndrome Ireland started supporting families in 1971.

It is the local branch of Down Syndrome Ireland and has been operating from its current location in Castletroy since 2008.
