LIMERICK City and County Council staff manage just three dog waste bins in the whole of the urban area, it’s been revealed.
At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, Social Democrats councillor Elisa O’Donovan sought information on the bins used for dog owners to dump the waste emanating from their animals.
In a written response from council director Vincent Murray, she was told that the local authority's domestic waste and litter teams manage the three bins.
They are located at Dooradoyle Road, Church Road in Raheen and Fr Russell Road.
“Each bin is served weekly by an authorised waste collector. Any of the general waste litter bins provided by the council's cleansing team can be used for disposing of dog waste,” the official added.
As a policy, Mr Murray said the council requests dog owners to take responsibility for the removal of their pets’ waste from public places and dispose of it properly.
Elsewhere, Mr Murray also revealed council employs two full-time dog wardens whose role it is to prevent misbehaviour by dogs.
The warden has the power to seize any dog from a public area, prevent dog attacks on people of livestock, andinspect dog breeding establishments. This information was presented to Cllr Catherine Slattery.
