New campaign to highlight lack of ‘accessible’ housing in Limerick

THE IRISHWheelchair Association (IWA) has highlighted what it says is the lack of accessible housing in Limerick.

Think Ahead, Think Housing is a campaign calling for people with disabilities to appeal to their local authorities for wheelchair and disability- accessible housing.

In a statement, Majella Fagan, the services manager of the Irish wheelchair commented: “We know that in Limerick and across Ireland there isn’t an accessible housing shortage, there is a complete absence of any wheelchair liveable housing options.”

Ms Fagan added that because of this there are 1,300 young and middle-aged people with physical disabilities (nationally) who have been forced to live in nursing homes for the elderly.

The campaign aims to inform and assist people with disabilities on applying for accessible social housing.

Before 2021, it had not been possible for a disabled person to specifically include their accessibility requirements on their social housing application.

The Government’s national housing strategy, Housing for All, aims to increase the supply of social housing to an average of 33,000 per year over the next decade through €4 billion in state funding per year.

The IWA are encouraging people with disabilities to apply to be included in this plan.
