EIB Vice President Ricardo Mourinho with LCCC Chief Executive, Dr Pat Daly at signing of agreement in Dublin
REDUCING energy costs and consumption for the people of Limerick is a new goal that Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) has set its eyes on.
In partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB), LCCC has taken on a new project which recognises the impacts that energy poverty is having on the public, and tackling the problem via home upgrades.
The agreement was signed by Vice President of the EIB, Ricardo Mourinho, LCCC Chief Executive, Dr Pat Daly, and Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O'Brien, TD.
This new collaboration aims to replicate successful investment models from across Europe and ‘enhance lives’, ‘combat climate change’, and strengthen ‘public finances’, according to Minister O’Brien.
“The European Investment Bank has been a strong advocate for high-impact housing investment in Ireland, and we applaud their commitment to supporting the construction of new homes,” he said.
“This new collaboration with Limerick City and County Council represents another significant milestone in our collective efforts, this time upgrading existing homes to enhance the lives of our citizens, combat climate change, and revitalise our public finances.”
Addressing the challenges faced in social homes throughout Ireland, Dr Pat Daly of LCCC said: “This partnership between the European Investment Bank and Limerick City and County Council is a significant step towards creating warmer, more comfortable homes for our residents.
“With 177,000 social homes across Ireland, we face considerable challenges in addressing energy poverty. However, this joint effort not only tackles the social and economic dimensions but also contributes to job creation.”
In recent years, the EIB has provided more than €1bn for social housing and urban regeneration investment across Ireland, including the regeneration of Limerick city centre.
