Danny Cahill died following a road collision at the weekend
LIMERICK Ladies Gaelic Football Association are mourning the devastating loss of Danny Cahill, a dedicated coach to the county U16 team, and they vow to honour his memory.
A cherished member of the ladies football community, Danny's life was tragically cut short in a car accident while returning home to Killorglin, County Kerry after Limerick inter-county training in Martinstown outside Kilmallock last Sunday afternoon.
Danny was involved in coaching Limerick development squads. His sudden departure has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him.
His close friend and Limerick U16 manager Charlie McCarthy described him as a “gentle and kind man with a big heart,” with an unwavering passion for football, Danny's love for the game was evident throughout his life.
Having played at various levels, including minor and with the Kerry U21 panel in 1991, Danny's commitment and talent shone brightly.
His club, Laune Rangers, held him dear as he proudly represented them, culminating in his captaincy during the 1988 All-Ireland minor win over Dublin.
Transitioning seamlessly into coaching, Danny became an inspirational figure for young athletes.
He dedicated his time and knowledge to nurturing and mentoring Laune Rangers ladies teams across different age groups.
Danny's coaching was highly sought after, leading him to join the Kerry U14 management team in 2020 and 2021.
His dedication to the sport continued to shine as he extended his guidance to Boherbue Comprehensive School in Cork, coaching both senior and junior ladies in 2021 and 2022. His passion for the game brought him to Limerick and he was involved in the underage teams. Danny joined the Limerick U16 team last year.
This year, the team achieved remarkable success, reaching the A final, a testament to Danny's unwavering support and expertise. The joy he experienced alongside the Limerick girls was immeasurable, and he took immense pride in being a part of their journey.
The loss of Danny Cahill has cast a profound shadow over his loving wife Sarah, daughter Lucy, her partner Davvee, his parents Mattie and Hannah, sister Mary, brothers Pat and Jerome, and all extended family.
The Kerry and Limerick communities are united in mourning a figure whose impact will be remembered for years to come.
