THE ORDER of Malta Ambulance Corps marked 75 years of service to the people of Limerick at a mayoral reception.
The volunteer group was hosted by Councillor Francis Foley, Mayor of Limerick City and County at the special event on Friday, May 5 at City Hall.
The reception was in recognition of the group’s members, past and present, who have given selfless and dedicated service as volunteer paramedics to the people of Limerick and to the wider community since 1948.
The Mayor thanked the unit for its tremendous and dedicated service to the people of Limerick at the many civic, social and sporting events covered by the unit.
He particularly thanked them for the many volunteer hours during the Covid-19 pandemic by delivering lunches to children from schools, medication collection for those cocooning from the virus, as well as transporting many individuals to hospital appointments, vaccination clinics and for Covid-19 testing.
Members were joined by their families at the celebrations.
A scroll was presented by the Mayor to Jim Keogh, who is the officer in charge of the unit.
Jim said: “It is a great honour for our members to be recognised for the many hours of voluntary service to the community. I am very proud to lead such a dedicated group of volunteers”.
Another major milestone was marked on the evening when the Mayor presented Tom Hanly, a lifelong member of the Ambulance Corps, with a scroll to mark his 64 years of service.
Tom joined as a Cadet at the age of 10 and has continued to volunteer with the Limerick Unit ever since.
He rose through the ranks having been Officer in Charge of both the Limerick and Shannon Units as well as serving as Regional Director and rising to Assistant Director.
Tom remains active to this very day by carrying out many community care activities as well as delivering life-saving training to many industry and community groups.
A fitting tribute to a gentleman that has given so much time to help others.
Members were joined by their families at the celebrations.
