HUNDREDS of young chess players will make history as Ireland will host the European School Chess Championships for the first time.

The University of Limerick will serve as the venue for this prestigious event, which is expected to attract 300 to 400 young European chess players in June 2024.

These young chess enthusiasts will be accompanied by their families, coaches, and supporters. The games will be broadcast live on Twitch TV and online, allowing spectators from around the world to witness the intense competition.

Limerick, as the host city, is said to be a "fitting" host city, given its association with Diana Mirza, who claimed the World Schools Under-17 Chess Championship in 2017.

Expressing his enthusiasm on behalf of Limerick City and County, Councillor Joe Pond stated, "the University of Limerick, renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities and commitment to excellence in education, will provide the perfect setting to ignite the minds of these young chess players.

"I would like to congratulate the Irish Chess Union on winning the bid and their appreciation for the assets and facilities that Limerick has to offer to international tournaments."

Desmond Beatty, Chairperson of the Irish Chess Union, expressed his delight at hosting the European School Chess Championships in Ireland for the first time.

Beatty highlighted the success of previous international chess events, such as the Glorney Cup and Chessmates, and he encouraged local individuals and businesses to actively support the event and its participants.

Speaking on behalf of UL Conference & Sports Campus, David Ward said, "we look forward to setting the stage for a thrilling tournament in June 2024 and hope that many memorable moments will unfold.”

The Irish Chess Union (ICU) secured the bid to host the championships, with support from UL, Limerick City & County Council, Failte Ireland, and the Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau.
