Gardai investigating theft of two cars seen 'racing' on Limerick motorway

GARDAI in Limerick are investigating the theft of two cars who were later seen "racing" each other on the M7 motorway. 

Both cars were stolen in the early hours of Wednesday, May 17 and were subsequently involved in multiple acts of dangerous driving around the city and county.

The first was a red Mazda Demio with a 132D registration. It was stolen between 12am and 5am from The Conifers, Briarfield, Castletroy.

The second was a white Toyota Aqua with a 162L registration. It was stolen from Riverbrook Close, Shannon Banks in Corbally, also between 12 midnight and 5am.

Both cars stopped and refilled with petrol at a service station in Castletroy at 5:52am. The occupants of both cars did not pay for same.

Both cars were later seen driving recklessly on the M7 motorway from Birdhill towards Limerick at 7:45am.

Eye witnesses noticed that they appeared to be "racing" each other.

The red Mazda was later seen driving dangerously between Bruff and Kilmallock at 9:15am. It was subsequently recovered by gardai at Deebert Park, Kilmallock at 11:15am.

The white Toyota Aqua was later seen by eye witnesses driving dangerously around the green at Garyowen at 9am.

It was later discovered burnt out by the gardai at the Canal bank adjacent to St. Mary’s Park at 9:30am.

Gardai have said that it appears that both of these crimes are linked.
