Students and staff of Crescent College Comprehensive with Croatian Ambassador Davor Vidiš and Limerick city TD Kieran O'Donnell
STUDENTS in Limerick participated in a performance of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy in celebration of 50 years of Ireland’s membership in the European Union.
Among the Limerick Schools to take part in the performance were students from Crescent College Comprehensive.
Students from Crescent College who form the school choir with help from their music teacher, Roisin Lavery sang a rendition of the EU anthem for Minister of State and Limerick city TD, Kieran O’Donnell and Croatian Ambassador Davor Vidiš.
The students sang the anthem in both English and Irish.
Lisa Bennett, a teacher at the school says it has been “really difficult” to do performances at the school as of late.
“We’re currently going through a major renovation and with Covid the last few years it has been difficult for students to show off their skills,” she said.
The students at Crescent College have been practising for this nationwide event for the past two weeks.

“They absolutely loved it. They really did. I think what they enjoyed the most was being able to perform in such a public way,” Lisa added.
The initiative is part of EU50, the Government’s programme of events from January 2022 to May 2023 celebrating Ireland’s membership of the EU over the last 50 years.
The Department of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the Department of Education and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, invited schools at all levels to learn, rehearse and perform the EU Anthem to celebrate our shared European values and citizenship.
