PLANNERS are expected to make a decision on proposals for a new housing estate in Newcastle West by the end of this month.

It comes after developers behind the project furnished Limerick City and County Council with more information on the proposed scheme.

Kasbeen Limited has sought permission from the local authority to build almost 100 houses at Churchtown Road on the outskirts of the town.

If approved, the units will include one detached, 16 semi-detached and 40 terraced two-storey dwelling houses.

On top of this, 36 apartments are planned in six three-storey blocks.

Access will be provided from the Station Road side of the development, which is currently a vacant field.

Following receipt of the planning application in July 2022, Limerick City and County Council sought more information from the developer the following September.

Some concerns have been raised by a number of neighbouring residents regarding the size of the apartment complex.

Concerns over the impact on privacy have also been raised.

The council also heard concerns over the proximity of four of the planned houses to a neighbouring residential development.

Residents also called for a wall to be built around the new development so as not to impact on the privacy of nearby residents.

They also cited concerns over pressure on sewage, traffic congestion plus wastewater and drainage.

Local Independent councillor Jerome Scanlan, who lives in the town, said the land has been earmarked for development for a long time.

A decision is due by Wednesday, May 24 next.
