Green Limerick: Crescent students take part in a spring cleaning

Pitching in: Crescent College Comprehensive students taking part in the Team Limerick Clean-up

IT MAY have been two weeks since the Team Limerick Clean-up (TLC) on Good Friday but that didn’t stop one Limerick school from participating in the event a little later than usual.

Approximately 160 students from Crescent College Comprehensive took part in the county-wide cleaning event last week as it suited the students who had just arrived back to school from the Easter break.

The mostly first-year students along with teachers and staff took to the local community to litter pick, keeping mostly to residential areas surrounding the school.

Lisa Bennett, a staff member at Crescent College Comprehensive said the locals were “delighted to see” the students showing up in force.

“Oh the students absolutely loved it,” she began.

“What they loved most was speaking to the residents who were also giving a hand to clean up the area.

“It was a very social exercise for them as well,” she mentioned.

According to Lisa, the students loved looking back at the area they cleaned and seeing everything “clean and picked up”.

“It will help them in the future to notice rubbish in their area and encourage them to pick it up,” she said.

The school has a long-running tradition of taking part in the clean-up thanks to Green Schools co-ordinator Bill Sheehan.

Helen O'Donnell, one of the founding members of TLC which includes JP McManus and Paul O’Connell, spoke to students about the benefit of TLC.

The aim of TLC is to get the people of Limerick together and make it a cleaner place for everyone who lives here.

“It certainly achieved that and more, not only did the students clean up the streets, but they also made valuable connections with the residents along the way,” Lisa added.
