The upgrades are expected to be completed by 2027
CASTLETROY Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) will see an extensive upgrade to support the existing and future population and economic growth of the area.
The project will see Uisce Éireann, work in partnership with Limerick City and County Council (LCCC).
Castletroy WWTP has been providing treatment to the area since the early 1990s and services the areas of Castletroy, Annacotty, Mountshannon, and Castleconnell as well as the University of Limerick.
The large number of upgrades will include an increased capacity of stormwater and foul pumps in the existing main lift pump station; discharge skip and odour control equipment; a new forward feed pump station; an additional chemical dosing tank and ancillary equipment and roof-mounted solar panels.
The plant is currently operating at the upper limits of its capacity and Uisce Éireann has identified that an upgrade is required.
The proposed upgrade will modernise the plant and increase the current capacity by over 70% which will ensure Uisce Éireann can continue to protect the water quality in the lower river Shannon, comply with national and EU legislation and support social and economic growth in east Limerick.
The project has been designated as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) and the planning application is to be submitted to An Bord Pleanála in the near future.
Subject to planning being granted by An Bord Pleanála, it is expected that the wastewater plant will be completed by 2027.
On completion, Uisce Éireann have stated the upgraded wastewater treatment plant will ensure the provision of wastewater services that meet the needs of both domestic and commercial customers in east Limerick.
