THE PRESIDENT of the University of Limerick (UL), Professor Kerstin Mey has expressed her sadness following the loss of a "valued member" of the UL community.

The body of Ronan Moran, a first-year student at UL from County Leitrim, was discovered at a premises in Castletroy on Wednesday.

Prof Mey, in a message circulated to all UL students and staff members, paid tribute to the young man who was aged in his late teens:

"I am so deeply sad to inform you of the passing of a valued member of our University of Limerick Community Ronan Moran, first-year Bachelor of Education in Graphics, Engineering and Technology.

"We hold Ronan’s family in our thoughts especially his parents John and Geraldine and his brothers Kevin and Fergal.

"Our sympathies go out to all of Ronan’s classmates and lecturers, to his housemates, friends and fellow UL students and the many others who will be devastated by his loss," Prof Mey added.

Gardai are currently preparing a file for the local coroner.

While investigations into Ronan's death are ongoing, it is understood that gardai do not suspect foul play.
