Mayor of Limerick and delegation to travel to New York for St Patrick's Day

A delegation from Limerick City and County Council will attend the St Patrick's Day parade in New York

THE MAYOR of Limerick City and County Council will travel to New York for the famous St Patrick's Day parade.

Cllr Francis Foley along with a delegation from the local authority will travel to the Big Apple to take part in a variety of events taking place.

The events will help councillors develop and foster links between Limerick and the United States.

The delegation will meet representatives from business as well as community leaders while attending the festival which includes tourism and business events.

New York is no stranger to visitors from Limerick for St Patrick's Day which is seen as a great opportunity to promote Limerick in the broader International area.

The trip will also benefit Limerick in the areas of tourism, culture, community and economic development.

The cost of the trip is €2,800 per councillor.

Before one of the most important trips of the year for the Mayor, Limerick's First Citizen will be making other visits to mark St Patrick's Day.

On March 4, Cllr Foley will attend the annual Queen's County St Patrick's Day parade at Rockway Beach.

The event is the second largest parade in New York with the cost of the trip €2,200 per councillor.

Meanwhile, back home, the theme for this year's festival being held in Limerick city has been announced.

People are being encouraged to 'Discover Limerick' as part of the 2023 festivities, the centre-piece of which will be the St Patrick's Day parade which is expected to return to its traditional route through O'Connell Street from midday on Friday, March 17.

Limerick's many attractions are to be highlighted as part of the celebrations which will carry on throughout the Bank Holiday weekend, winding up with the traditional International Band Championship on Sunday, March 19 next.

And in preparation for the weekend, communities are being asked: What is your Limerick and what do you want people to know about your county?

While the traditional parade and band championship will be the highlights of the festival, there will be many other events announced in the coming weeks.
