OVER €1 million has been allocated to support communities in Limerick, especially with the welcoming of Ukrainian people.

Fifty million euro has been allocated to communities across the county under a new initiative by the Department Rural and Community Development.

The Community Recognition Fund will cover all local authorities with Limerick receiving €1,389,505 based on the amount of new arrivals in the city and county. It will be allocated over 2023 and 2024.

Developments to infrastructure, walkways, parks, and local gardens are just some of the upgrades planned to be made. Sport club facilities and art and music organisations will also receive support.

"Funding is available for a wide range of projects, such as the purchase of community vehicles and the enhancement of local clubs’ facilities and amenities" Minister Humphreys stated.

"Communities the length and breadth of the country have really stepped up to the plate in recent weeks, opening their homes and facilities to people very much in need."

"This Fund is recognising the vital role our communities are playing as we continue to deal with many challenges, not least the war in Ukraine."

"Today’s announcement will empower communities across the country in developing projects that directly address local needs. I am confident that this new initiative will deliver tangible benefits to communities all across Ireland." Minister Joe O'Brien added.

Applications from local authorities are now open and projects will be allocated in areas with the highest level of need.

Limerick Senator Maria Byrne stated her appreciation of the fund: "Communities will be enabled to develop and deliver initiatives that directly address their local needs."

"It could be used for transport infrastructure such as the purchase of a community vehicle or bus shelter, or it could be used to develop sports clubs or for arts and music."

"I encourage local community groups to engage with Limerick City and County Council to assess how funding might be accessed and best utilised."
