Residents in Limerick community urged to join the University Hospital Limerick protest

Garryowen Residence Association call on locals to join the University Hospital Limerick protest

The Garryowen Residents Association are calling on members of the community to put aside differences and march in the UHL protest

THE chairperson of the Garryowen Residents Association (GRA) says “people need the comfort of a good health service,” as he calls on support from the community at the upcoming University Hospital Limerick protest.

On Saturday, thousands of people are expected to march in protest over the conditions in UHL to call for more resources and push for better public health provision in the region overall.

Chairperson of the GRA John Nugent believes the protest is an excellent way to put aside societal division and march for a common cause.

“In society nowadays you have so many different societal divisions such as the unemployed pitted against the employed and those from this country against foreign nationals.

“The march in UHL is a fantastic way of putting aside the differences these people have and show that we are all the same by marching together.

Mr Nugent and the GRA are calling on community groups in Garryowen to join in on the march also.

“For groups such as the local tidy towns it's not on their agenda to be attending protests but all we are asking is that these groups have this conversation and see what comes of it,” Mr Nugent said.

“We do have support from the women’s shed and a couple of other groups around the community and there seems to be a good momentum there but we won’t know for sure what the turn-out will be like until we get to the protest.”

Mr Nugent thinks a hospital should be a place of comfort and a place of support.

“Unfortunately it’s gone the opposite way.

“Here in Garryowen, a different generation had the comfort of St John’s A&E open 24/7 so that if anything happened we could just pop down the road and we’re sorted.

“People lack that comfort nowadays,” Mr Nugent mentioned.

The UHL protest takes place this Saturday, January 21 at 11am from City Hall, Merchant’s Quay in Limerick city.
