A LIMERICK estate management group have appealed plans to construct a 24-apartment building in the city.
The planning permission was granted to Lonadale Limited to develop the apartment building last year.
Our Lady of Lourdes Estate Management Project (OLOLEMP) appealed the construction of the development in the Greenfields estate on Childers Road.
The appeal to An Bord Pleanála was lodged by OLOLEMP on behalf of members of the local community who believe the proposed five-storey building will look out of place.
Katherine Kirby of the OLOLEMP said she assisted local residents with the appeal process.
“Some of the local residents living close to the development have an issue with the height of the building and that it will be encroaching too close to some of the houses in the estate,” Katerine said.
“We got together with residents and we put a joint submission together on their behalf.
Although the building according to Katherine and the local residents will look out of place compared to the houses beside it they believe that housing is needed in the area.
“There’s a need for housing in every area,” Katherine exclaimed.
“It’s not the housing we objected towards, it’s the height.
“24 units in that small spot is quite imposing. If you were living there it would impact your life on a daily basis,” Katherine added.
Katherine also mentioned that she believes if a development is kept in line with the design of the houses around it, it would be welcomed with open arms.
“There’s also a problem with flooding and drainage in the area so they believe that an extra 24 apartments on top of that will cause more problems again,” Katherine added.
The appeal by OLOLEMP was submitted a few weeks before Christmas and a decision is expected by Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
