REPRESENTATIVES from University Hospital Limerick have met with the family of a teenage girl who passed away from meningitis at the hospital.
Aoife Johnston, from Shannon, died in December after becoming ill suddenly. The 16 year-old had attended the Emergency Department of University Hospital Limerick in Dooradoyle.
It has been reported that Aoife spent up to 17 hours on a trolley at the hospital waiting to be admitted.
An investigation has been launched by the UL Hospitals Group into the care the schoolgirl received while at the hospital.
Damien McCallion, HSE Chief Operations Officer have confirmed that representatives from the hospital have met with Aoife's family.
Speaking to Morning Ireland on RTE Radio One, Mr McCallion said an investigation has commenced which will look at all circumstances surrounding the teen's death.
Offering their “sincere condolences” to her family, a spokesperson for the UL Hospitals Group said a Serious Incident Management Team had been established following Aoife's death and a comprehensive investigation will take place.
