LIMERICK senior football goalkeeper Josh Ryan tore his cruciate knee ligament in action for his club Oola last weekend against Ballylanders.

In the opening nineteen minutes Josh Ryan had scored 1-1 and then he was then forced off through injury. The Irish Examiner has now reported that Ryan did suffer an ACL injury last weekend. Oola did just enough to hang on and retain their Senior Football Championship status when they defeated Ballylanders 2-8 to 1-10 last Saturday in Bruff.

This news comes just two weeks after Ryan was named on the Tailteann Cup team of the year. The Oola native impressed in the number one jersey on Limerick's run to the Tailteann Cup final. Ryan was awarded man of the match in the Shannonsiders Tailteann Cup semi-final victory over Wicklow after he saved a penalty.

The Limerick goalkeeper was in impressive scoring form for the east Limerick club scoring 4-35 in his side's six championship games this year. He previously played outfield with the Shannonsiders between 2017 and 2022 before he suffered a broken tibia.

On October 16 in 2022, Josh Ryan broke his tibia in three places playing for Doon in the Limerick senior hurling championship semi-final against Kilmallock.

2022 was Josh Ryan's last time playing outfield for Limerick against Cork in June during the qualifiers. On March 16, 2024, Josh Ryan made his return from injury, but this time in goals.

Jeffrey Alfred and Ronan Mcelligott now look likely to battle it out for Limerick number one jersey in 2026.
