LIMERICK face Tipperary in the preliminary quarter-final of the Tailteann Cup this Saturday, June 8 at 4pm in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale.
The Shannonsiders have been rewarded with a home preliminary quarter-final after finishing in second place in group four of the competition. Limerick defeated London in the round three of the Tailteann Cup on Saturday afternoon in Parnell Park on a final score of 2-14 to 0-10. Goals from Danny Neville and Paul Maher ultimately proved to be the difference in end as Jimmy Lee's charges recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Manager Lee feels it is massive for the group to get a home preliminary quarter-final.
“It's important to get games into them and they're a new bunch of lads coming together. The longer you get with them, the more they buy in to it and believe in it. We're happy to be in a prelim quarter-final and at the start of the year there was an expectation for us to get there and unfortunately expectations don't manage in what we had to deal with. We're happy with where are at.”
The last time Limerick faced Tipperary in championship action was the 2022 Munster SFC semi-final between the counties where Limerick defeated Tipp 2-10 to 0-10. The Premier county come into this weekend's tie on the back of defeating Wexford 3-5 to 0-12 with their third goal coming deep into injury time.
“After the Offaly game, training had changed a bit and the lads are happier in themselves. A few more are back and there's more competition for places. They're beginning to believe in each other.”
Cathal Downes and Danny Neville were two players that impressed in attack for Limerick last Saturday scoring 1-5 between them. Another positive was that Iain Corbett returned from injury and got through 70 minutes for the first time this year.
Leitrim face Wicklow, Laois host New York, while Antrim take on London in the three remaing preliminary quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup. A win for Limerick this Saturday over Tipperary will see them face either Kildare, Sligo or Fermanagh in the quarter finals of the Tailteann Cup.
Limerick centre half back Cillian Fahy said a home preliminary quarter final had been their target.
“We were talking before the start of the group that second place was our target and we wanted to get out of the group and get home preliminary quarter final. It's great that we will be back in Limerick,” he said.
