FR CASEYS

FINAL: Despite a gallant effort Fr. Caseys wait for a first Senior title since 2006 continues. The opening quarter saw Adare kick 1-03 without reply as the Abbeyfeale men found it hard to find their feet in front of the large crowd in Mick Neville Park. On eighteen minutes Diarmuid Buckley kicked a fine individual point and we were off the mark. This was soon followed by a point from Martin Scannell as Fr. Caseys were gaining dominance. A brace of Adare points halted the momentum and restored their six point cushion. Lady luck was not on our side, with two potential points coming off the posts and Martin Scannell denied a goal by a great save by the Adare keeper after David Ward broke a high ball into his path.
A big start was needed to the second half if we were to turn this game on its head. A pointed free from Eliah Riordan was soon cancelled out by Adare but the next fifteen minutes saw Fr. Caseys produce their finest football. Four points without reply were registered with a fisted point from Rory O’Brien, followed by a Martin Scannell free before captain Daniel Daly and Rory O’Brien scored fine points from play. The margin was now two points and there was renewed hope in the stands. A crowded goalmouth prevented a David Ward goal after great work from Cormac Roche. Adare badly needed a reply and they kicked their seventh point to gain some breathing space.
The deficit could have been more only for a fine save by keeper Shane O’Connell. A free converted by Eliah Riordan once more left just two points between the sides with ten minutes now on the watch.
Unfortunately that would be our last score as Adare added three points without reply in the closing stages. Another fine save from Shane O’Connell kept the game alive but the goals we needed never came despite the tireless effort of all involved.
Any county final defeat is hard to take but as the saying goes maybe you have to lose one to win one. This was the first taste of a senior county final for the majority of this team and that experience will stand to them in the future. A poor opening quarter maybe left the team with too much work to do but their powerful start to the second half meant Adare were pushed all the way and had to dig deep for victory.
The thirty four man squad and management team lead by Eoin Joy and Shane Kelly can be extremely proud of their efforts, they have done the club proud and their day will come. Many thanks to the large support who cheered them on until the end. Hopefully the winter is kind and this group can all return in 2025 for a second bite

MUNGRET ST PAULS

LADIES FOOTBALL: The Minor side had their second outing in the competition on Bank Holiday Monday against a strong Feohanagh/Castlemahon side. This group of players must be one of the busiest in the club, many of them played in the Munster Semi Final on Saturday, they also played and won a camoige semi final on Sunday, and after this minor match many went onto camoige trials.
It's fantastic to see them on the go so much and we are very proud of how they manage it all. Unfortunately things didn’t go in favour with this game as Feohanagh/Castlemahon proved to be too dominant in many positions.
Squad: Saoirse Ahern, Aoife Boyce, Emily Breen, Jillian Buckley, Jayne Casey, Anna Coughlan, Ciara Donnarumma, Caoimhe Hennessey, Aimee Horgan, Lorna Horgan, Sarah Horgan, Niamh Hynes, Rebecca Mitchell, Cameryn Moloney, Cáit Murphy, Clodagh Nestor, Róisín O Brien, Amy O Halloran, Katie O Mahony, Molly O Mahony, Emma O Rourke, Aisling O Sullivan, Rachel Somers, Niamh Stackpoole, Molly Tobin.
MUNSTER CLUB FINAL: On Saturday, October 26, Mungret travelled to Kerry to face Abbeydorney in the Munster Club Semi Final. There were 4 changes to the team that started the County Final 3 weeks previously. ClaireNan Coughlan started between the posts replacing Carol Bateman, Caoimhe O Neill slotted into defence, and upfront Megan O Malley and Jayne Casey got the nod.
It was Abbeydorney who got the better start, within 4 minutes of the throw in, they had 1-2 chalked on the board. It was on 7 minutes Gráinne Mc Kenna raised the first green flag for Mungret with a well taken free. After 20 minutes of play in what were misty conditions, the score saw Abbeydorney 1-6 to Mungret’s 4 points 2 more from McKenna and one from the boot of young Jayne Casey.
As far as half time Mungret continued to play catch up with the Kerry side. But before the half time whistle Mungret managed to net a goal from the speedy Casey, Abbeydorney cancelled this out with a goal of their own on the 32nd minute, Mc Kenna also put over another free leaving the half time score Abbeydorney 2-8 to Mungret 1-7.
After some juicy oranges, and wise words of encouragement from the management team headed by John Horgan, the girls took to the field in the second half with great gusto and determination to turn things around. Clare O Meara was quick off the blocks, a great pass to Niamh O Keeffe and bang, back of the net. Just the restart that Mungret needed. Soon after this the sides were level for the first time with Casey pointing one over the bar, 2-8 a piece.
Within 10 minutes O Meara raised a green flag. Mungret taking the lead now for the first time. On 50 minutes, Ruth O Connor (Abbeydorney) received a yellow card. Mungret made the most of the extra player with O Meara netting a great shot for a 3rd goal. McKenna scored another free. The wind was now at the heels of Mungret and things were looking good.
Before the full time whistle senior club stalwart Yvette Moynihan put her name on the score sheet, along with Fiona Morrissey who scored the 4th goal for Mungret. Fantastic result for the girls, massive team work on display and a lively game of football was enjoyed by the many travelling supporters. Final score Abbeydorney 2-8 Mungret 4-12.
On the other side of the draw Midleton(Cork) had a comprehensive victory over Shamrocks (Waterford), Mungret now face Midleton in the AIB Munster Club Final on Saturday, November 9 in Mallow.
Squad: Áine Ryan (Captain) Áine Ahern, Jillian Buckley, Shannon Burke, Jayne Casey, Mairead Clancy, Róisín Duffy , Claire Nan Coughlan, Niamh Crowley, Laura Dunne, Laura Hanlon, Sarah Horgan, Justine Kenneally, Grainne McKenna, Cameryn Moloney, Aoife Morrissey, Fiona Morrissey, Yvette Moynihan, Áine Murphy, Róisín O Connor, Niamh O Keeffe, Katie O Mahony, Jenni O Malley, Megan O Malley, Clare O Meara, Caoimhe O Neill, Emma O Rourke, Siadbh Redmond, Lisa Reilly.

U16 HURLING: On Monday, October 28 Mungret St. Pauls hosted an intercounty hurling tournament with our U16 team. This was organised by one of the coaches Declan Sweeney with the help of Vinny Gleeson where the winners of the U16 Division 1 championships in Cork, Dublin and Kilkenny were invited to play two games.
Dublin representatives, St. Vincents from Marino were first up against Mungret St. Pauls. It was a tight game in the first half with both sides on six points by the break. The goals came in the second half and it was St. Vincents who had the better finish Mungret St. Pauls 1-8 St. Vincents, Dublin 1-11.
The second match saw a very competitive game between Corks, Sarsfields from Riverstown and Kilkennys, Erins Own from Castlecomer. Sarsfields were very strong in the first half going in on a nine point to four point lead at the break.
Back out and an early goal settled Erins Own back into the game as they leveled the game shortly after and with every score counting, only one point seperated the two sides by the final whistle. Erins Own, Kilkenny 1-12 Sarsfields, Cork 0-14. Unfortunately near the end of the game it got paused as one of the Sarsfields players required medical attention which we wish him a speedy recovery.
The next game was the third / fourth place play off against Mungret St. Pauls and Sarsfields, Cork. This was a much improved game for Mungret St. Pauls but they left it until the second half to pull ahead, a last minute goal from Sarsfields saw only one point seperating the two sides as the full time whistle blew Mungret St. Pauls 1-11 Sarsfields, Cork 2-7
The Cup final had St. Vincents of Dublin against Erins Own of Kilkenny. An early goal saw Dublin lead and looking very strong with their goalie pulling off some important saves.
A second goal for St. Vincents and they had a substantial lead by the break 0-6 to 2-5. Straight away from the throw in Erins Own narrowed the gap with a well taken goal, St. Vincents kept the lead for most of the game until five minutes left to play and Erins Own got their second goal and a one point lead they built on that and finished off with a third goal to win the game Erins Own, Kilkenny 3-11 St. Vincents, Dublin 2-9.
There was a player of the match awarded for each game with Mungret St. Pauls Killian Begley accepting the award for the runner up game, the honors went to Erins Own no. 9 player for the Cup final although there were many players who shone on the day. Chairperson, Donal Fitzgibbon was on hand to say a few words before Declan Sweeney handed over the COBI Sports sponsored Cup to the Erins Own captain on behalf of his team.
Well done to all on what was a feast of hurling with the rain holding back for most of the day. Special mention must go to the volunteers on the day who helped make the day run so smoothly, to our parking attendants, catering volunteers, umpires and of coarse our referees on the day Kevin and Seamus and the tournament sponsors COBI Sports. Thank you to all for giving up of your time.
U20 PREMIER HURLING: Mungret St. Pauls 4-22 Kilmallock 0-15. On Wednesday, October 30 in Caherdavin, our U20 hurlers meet with Kilmallock for the second time after the first match was called off due to light failure.
Mungret St. Pauls were first off the mark scoring a goal and two points by the second minute, it was a strong start as Kilmallock got their scores going from frees, Mungret St. Pauls still held the lead. A trio of points were followed by two more goals for Mungret St. Pauls by the end of the first quarter leaving Kilmallock 12 points behind. An exchange of points before Kilmallock went five points without reply bringing them back into the game. Mungret St. Pauls finished out the first half with two more additional points leaving the half time score 3-10 to 0-9 to Mungret St. Pauls.
Kilmallock opened the score at the restart but Mungret St. Pauls followed up from a free. Kilmallock then hit another purple patch as they narrowed the gap to seven points and then Mungret St. Pauls returned to scoring ways adding another six points and the fourth goal of the game while Kilmallock managed only 1 point.
Kilmallock pointed their 15th ball before Mungret St. Pauls powered their way to a strong win with another handful of goals to leave the game 4-22 to 0-15 and a second win in the U20 hurling Championship. This second win sees Mungret St. Pauls currently at the top of the table with the next match in a few days time against Doon.
U14 FOOTBALL: On Saturday, November 2 eight of our U14 players and two of our U13 players travelled to Mick Neville Park for the Super 10s finals day. Unfortunatly our U14 team had been hit with a string of injuries and illness but the players that attended on the day played very well.
They were first up against a very strong Firies team from Kerry but they never let their heads drop, they then went on to play Nire from Waterford which was a more even game with both teams getting in some great scores. Mungret St. Pauls were unlucky to come up short in the second game which ended their day of football and closed out their season.
U10 FOOTBALL: Well done to the U10 Mungret St Pauls hurlers who won the Joe McNamara tournament on Sunday, November 3, winning the shield and the cup. A great day out. This is a group making great strides, ones to watch in the club. Big thank you to the hosts Newmarket on Fergus.
